A study on the attitude toward elderly life and mental health card needs of adult children coresidence with their old parents

Abstract
Psychiatric illness in older people contribute to a major social and mental health burden on the part of the older person as well as for the family caregivers. It contributes to serious physical health problems and adversely affects the quality of life.
The aim of this study was to investigate the attitude elderly life and mental health care needs of adult childern coresidence with their old parents in Wonmi Gu, Buchon City. The date involve 417 visitors to the public helath center were asked to complete a self-administered survey on the mental health care needs for the elderly.
The main results of this study is as following;
1. The data show that majority of the sample(82%) are either living alone or living with spouse only. Also, the intention of utilization in care center for the elderly was 75.5%.
2. On the survey of mental helath needs of older people, dementia (74.4%) and depression (45.5%) were recognized by the respondents as two of the most important mental health problems of older people.
3. The most important mental health problems of older people of adult children without regard to coresided old parent were recognized dementia, but was not statistically significant relationship.
4. Family caregivers tended to regard medical fee discounts and extension of health insurance coverage period for mental services as the most important issue in taking care of the elderly without regard to coresided old parents. Also. Other service needs included health examination and formal home help and home care services.
This study points to the need for the development of mental health promotion and prevention activities of mental illnesses for community-dwelling older people. Future research should focus on a follow-up study of persons identified at risk of psychiatric illnesses to help address their health care needs and to develop a community mental health care programs.
